How to Do Social According to Mark Zukerberg

by Adam Killam on September 23, 2010

Techcrunch recently interviewed Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg about the company’s plans to enter the mobile space. An interesting point came up in the conversation about how companies think about social. (Quick aside: we used to call it social networking, then social media, now it’s just social :P )

Here’s a quote from Zuckerberg:

One thing that I think is really important — that I think is context for this, is that I generally think that most other companies now are undervaluing how important social integration is. Right, so even the companies that are starting to come around to thinking, ‘oh maybe we should do some social stuff’, I still think a lot of them are only thinking about it on a surface layer, where it’s like “OK, I have my product, maybe I’ll add two or three social features and we’ll check that box”. That’s not what social is. Social is. You have to design it in from the ground up. These experiences like what Zynga is doing or what a company like Quora is doing, I think that they have just a really good social integration. They’ve designed their whole product around the idea that your friends will be here with you. Everyone has a real identity for themselves. And those are fundamental building blocks. Now, I don’t know how long it’s going to take to get the mobile environments that you see today to a state where you can build really robust social applications on top of it. So that’s the biggest driving force for us — to try to work with these folks and see how deep we can get on our own to make sure that we can build that plumbing. Our goal is to make it exist.

The key take (away in case you missed my obvious bold of the lines above :D ) is that if you’re building something today, whether it be a new website, consumer driven software, or heck – even thinking about building a company in 2010, you need to be thinking about building it from the ground up as a social site/piece of software/product/service/enterprise.

It’s not good enough anymore to strap a social layer on to what you’re already doing. Building social in is as important as having a name, number, and a website address. It’s got to be baked right in.

The New Direction of the Net (Hint: it’s not social media)

by Adam Killam on September 15, 2010

If you’ve been trying to make sense of how to market your products and services on the web over the past year, you’ve likely been inundated with information about Twitter and Facebook among other social tools.

But there is a bigger shift going on.

Yes, online Video is huge but it’s not that…

Yes, mobile has something to do with it but I’m not talking about the mobile web specifically…

In the following article from Wired Magazine, New York Times best selling author Chris Brogan discusses the next evolution of the Internet.

This is an important read for just about anyone who has anything to do with making money, whether your business is online or off.

Google Instant: Not instantly available..yet

by Adam Killam on September 9, 2010

There was a buzz of information flying around this morning with the announcement of Google Instant. Instant refers to the new way Google will display search results and is an attempt to cut down the time it takes to find what you’re searching for.

However, the service is not yet available in Canada as far as I can tell, at least not as of today. In the mean time, you can.. Update: As Oana pointed out in the comment below, you need to be using Google.com NOT Google.ca in order to use Google Instant.

Check out Google’s promo video on Youtube which gives you an overview of the new interface:

Personally what I will be interested to see is how Instant affects Google Adwords impressions and results.

Will there be a huge increase in impressions as pages and pages of ads get shown rapidly to users as they flip through search results? When I have some answers to these and other questions, I’ll be sure to post them here.
