Online Marketing Background

I got my start in the field of web marketing several years ago when, as an inside sales rep for a small technology firm, I became quite intrigued with our website’s ability to generate a seemingly endless supply of leads.

At the time, my job required me to cold call and prospect daily and I soon realized that the several leads being generated a day via our website were of far better quality in most cases then the ones I could find on my own.

I soon set out to learn as much as I could about how leads were generated online, where website traffic came from and how I could get more of it. It seemed to me to be a far more efficient use of my time to get people to contact me rather me trying to contact everyone else.

In order to learn the skills of the trade I took an introductory search engine optimization (SEO) course, began setting up and practicing on my own websites, hung out in online forums and basically consumed as much information as I possibly could.

In time I learned enough to begin seeing some results with my own websites and it wasn’t long before friends and then other people in my network began asking for help with their own sites. Things naturally grew from there.

Today, to keep my skills sharp, I typically invest 1-2 hours a day in reading industry blogs, conversing with other web marketers on Twitter and Facebook, attending webinars, and taking part in online communities that focus on the skills of the trade.

By far the most valuable experience I get every day however, is the interactions with my growing portfolio of clients and their websites (and my own).

Salesforce.com Background

In addition to my Internet marketing skill set, I am extremely familiar with Salesforce.com, the award winning and highly popular Customer Relationship Management system (CRM).

Over the past three years, I have used SFDC as an admin, sales, and marketing user and more recently have worked as a consultant helping companies setup and use Salesforce.com for email and pay-per-click (PPC) marketing.

My involvement with Salesforce.com also includes founding the Vancouver Salesforce.com User Group, (which I grew to 190+ members over two years before stepping down in Jan of ‘09) speaking at the Salesforce.com Vancouver 2007 City Tour, and speaking at Salesforce.com’s Annual User Conference in San Francisco: Dreamforce 2007.

Speaking at Dreamforce 2007 was the experience of a lifetime. I got to sit about 20 feet away from George Lucas of Star Wars fame and got to test my speaking skills by speaking to a group of 250 people on the Salesforce.com for Google Adwords integration. What a blast!

What’s my fascination with Salesforce?
Simply put, Salesforce.com has taught me how to take each part of a business and systematize it according to industry best practices, while leveraging my time and skills to build an entire company on demand. I think it’s one of the coolest and most useful applications to come of age since Google.

Outside of the office..

When not working on Internet Marketing / SFDC related projects, I like to take time to hang with friends, hike the Grouse Grind, snowboard, mountain bike, read (a lot of reading..about 100 books a year), and get into excellent shape via CrossFit.

I am also learning the ropes of real estate investing, and love to travel for business and fun and do so when ever I get the chance.
