In short, I am.  I’m Alex, the new Junior Internet Marketing Strategist at Adam Killam Internet Marketing.   Starting this week, you’ll see me posting here on a number of topics (including my personal favourite, social media).

I have been in the world of Internet marketing since 2007. Since graduating from UBC in 2009 with a B.Com in Marketing, I have worked on several Internet marketing and social media projects.  I’m honing my skills in areas I haven’t yet had a chance to work – disciplines such as pay-per-click management and list building, to name a couple.

When I’m done nursing my Internet marketing addiction, I feed my social media addiction.  And when I’m done that, I stay busy reading, exercising, attempting ambitious art projects, and drinking more tea than is reasonable or necessary.

The CrossFit Games are the ultimate test of fitness. It’s a grueling two-day competition in which the world’s fittest athletes compete in a variety of workouts. What are the workouts? Each year they change, and the details of them are not announced until a couple days before the event. This means that all year long, the athletes are training for a competition whose format is almost completely a mystery.

I’m fortunate to be able to say that despite the economic downtown my business grew in 2009 as more and more people took to the web in a serious way.  Even in ancient industries like financial services and construction companies can no longer ignore the power of the web as a sales and marketing tool. It’s just too important.

Here’s what I’m up to today…

This morning I completed a list of goals for 2010. This is something I do every year, the last week of the year: I sit down and review last years goals and how I did and then I write up a new list for the coming year. I focus on coming up with goals in each of the important areas of my life such as: health, relationships, finances, career, education and so on. I put dates on each of the goals, write them in the first person and then workout a plan for the major goals and then add dates to my calendar. Dream it up, plan it, schedule it and then get it done.

The second thing I’m working on right now is a newsletter for clients, prospects and partners (and perhaps a few close friends) that I plan to send out by good old fashion mail in January. I’m taking a look back at 2009 and a look forward into 2010 to highlight some of the things that I feel are important for people to grasp and keep in mind in the coming year. It will of course be focused on Internet marketing and online sales, the things I work on every day with my clients.

So why a paper newsletter?

In 2009 one of the things I began doing was buying up old school direct marketing books like they were going out of style. I think I bought 10+ books in the past 2-3 months and I’ve been reading them almost non-stop. The idea that the web is a direct marketing medium was something I learned by paying attention to Internet marketing legend Ken McCarthy and since the light bulb went off, I’ve been studying away.

One of the things Ken believes in is communicating early and often with your customers and prospects, (something believe in but admittedly I lost site of in 2009 as I got caught up in client work and new projects). He also believes in communicating in as man mediums as possible and good ol’fashioned mail is still something pay attention to so I thought I’d give it a shot.

Another reason I want to send this out by mail is I think it creates a perception that’s different than a blog post or an email and I hope this will be something people will actually open and take some time to read. I think having something in your hand feels more valuable: it’s tangible and real as opposed to just staring at a computer screen like we’ve all been doing for so long.

That wasn’t the only “aha” that was triggered for me in the past few months. Right now I think my head is bursting with knowledge and ideas – there has been soo much innovation and change in the past 3-4 months its mind boggling and find myself needing to write about.

I’m leaving the laptop at home for this one and am only taking a carry on bag, sandals, 2 t-shirts, 2 pairs of shorts and a few miscellaneous including a book on copy writing and the latest copy of INC magazine.

I’ll be checking in after I get settled but may have spotty Internet access until I return on December 3rd.

It’s been a great year, a busy year, and it’s time for a break.

Since the service launched “more than 3,000 venues and 1,500 users” have been added in Vancouver.

Yesterday I was interviewed by Gillian Shaw of the Vancouver Sun and was quoted in an article about Foursquare that was published today.

Here’s the quote:

Vancouver Web marketing consultant Adam Killam doesn’t mind sharing his whereabouts with friends on his social network. When he tweeted his intention to meet a friend at Earl’s in Yaletown and checked in with Foursquare when he got there, the manager sent free beer to their table.

“Especially being in the technology community, we all hang out in the same places and we want to meet. If you have a secret meeting in a shady part of town you may not want to share it,” he said, laughing.

Although cloud computing has existed for a number of years, Microsoft Corp., Google and other IT heavyweights only recently began applying the label to their services.

Adam Killam, an Internet marketing consultant, noted that that Salesforce.com Inc. – a company that delivers a customer management service over the Internet and whose name is synonymous with cloud computing – was founded in 1999.

At that time, only larger companies had the connectivity required for cloud computing.

“Now the everyday mom-and-pop shop … can use an application that’s being used by some of the biggest businesses in the world,” said Killam, founder of the Vancouver Salesforce.com User Group.

“You pay your $65 a month or whatever it is … and you get the same features and functionality that J.P. Morgan has.”

I am currently re-working the content of the site and have plans to further alter the home page, and other main pages of the site.

Today I updated the About page to give people a better description of who I am and what I do. 

My goal is to make this site more visitor friendly, less cluttered and of course to convert more traffic!

I wore a less flashy watch to a meeting today and will be tweaking the site in the coming week or so to see if I can simplify it a bit (yes, it’s already quite simple and I can do better!).

With all the talk lately of recession, marketing in tough economic times etc etc, it makes sense for marketers to be a little less flashy and focus their messages more on the bottom line and how they can make and save their clients money.

For me, that means the site needs to be less about adding widgets and more about focusing on good, solid, valuable content that my clients will find applicable to their businesses.

On that note today’s tip is:  go back to basics.

Practical applications:

• Update and simplify your web site’s theme / design 
• Don’t be afraid to use or go back to plain text emails or simplified HTML
• If blogging or using Twitter, focus on practical tips and less theory (marketers are the most guilty of breaking this one)

I think going frugal is a trend we’re going to see catch on and stick for the next couple of years. As more ideas on this topic come to mind, I’ll post them here.
