As some of you may or may not know, I earned a spot on the B.C Floorball team this year and will be representing B.C this Saturday and Sunday as we take on Alberta and Ontario.

For those of you new to Floorball, it is the sport that all the Scandanavian NHL’ers grow up playing and use to train their stick handling abilities. In that part of the world Floorball is far, far bigger than ice hockey and matches draw huge crowds.

It is growing rapidly here in B.C and in the rest of Canada and is being adopted by a growing number of young and old hockey players and fans alike. This would be a great thing to bring your kids out to if you have them.

Take a look at this promo video for the World Floorball Championships from last year. If it inspires you to come out on Saturday, then I will see you at the Richmond Oval!

Oh, and be sure to pass this on to anyone you know who plays hockey, or ball hockey- kids included!

Stick handling is not my forte, but I take great pride in my shot blocking ability and using my size to steamroll the opposite team’s forwards!

So this post is giving you the down low on what I’ve been up to. It will not be a how to guide of any sort and will have little to do with you learning Internet marketing tactics or strategy, although it will have to do with marketing and the web because that’s what most of my business life is about.

Yes, this month I participated in Movember and grew a mustachio and raised money for prostate cancer. For the men reading this, if you do not know what Movember is, see the link above and mark it in your calendar to participate next year. It’s a blast and it’s for a good cause. Your significant other will likely not be impressed but life’s not fair so suck it up and join the millions of men standing together once a year and do your part!

Aside from Movember, business has been busy. I have been to Chicago twice this year, the last time in Chicago to meet with a couple of mentors of mine in the CPA industry. For those of you who don’t know what that is, CPA marketing is a form of affiliate marketing where you generate leads (e.g a form on your website or someone elses website is filled out as a result of traffic you sent to the site) and you get paid a commission on each lead generated.

I paid a small fortune to sit in a room with two guys who generate in excess of $350,000 per month between the two of them to learn their tips and strategies for lead generation. I want to spend more time talking about that experience but I’m low on time tonight. Needless to say, that meeting, those 8 hours will likely have a large impact on the direction of my business in 2011.

In 2010 I invested close to $10,000 (final tally not complete) in my marketing education. This includes the event above and in a future post, before the year is out I want to tell you more about what I invested that money in, what I learned and how I will be changing what I do based on all of that. 2011 is shaping up to be a major year of change for me.

I’m at the risk of beginning to ramble here but as things stand now, I think 2010 was the last year I will tell people I am an Internet marketing consultant. I’m not 100% certain of that but that’s the way things are looking. I am changing my focus. This does not mean web marketing or digital marketing will not be a part of what I do, but the scope of my business, the services I provide and the industries I will serve (and not serve any longer) it’s clear all of that is about to change. My eyes have been opened to a new way of doing things and a new way of thinking about business and marketing and sales in the past few months- and new business models. Soo many new ideas that I’ve encountered since October that I am taking some time off to digest and then change the direction of my work.

As if I couldn’t be any more vague in this post, I’ll finish it off by saying it’s been an awesome year. It’s not quite over and you will hear from me again before it is but it has been good. I now understand some things about business and marketing that have been eluding me for years. I now understand some things that in my gut I knew I was missing and a lot of people I was listening to still don’t get. I’ve found some new sources of information and mentoring that I trust in and I’ve found new direction.

IMC 2010 will feature Guy Kawasaki and more than 70 other global leaders in online marketing. In short, I am.  I’m Alex, the new Junior Internet Marketing Strategist at Adam Killam Internet Marketing.   Starting this week, you’ll see me posting here on a number of topics (including my personal favourite, social media).

I have been in the world of Internet marketing since 2007. Since graduating from UBC in 2009 with a B.Com in Marketing, I have worked on several Internet marketing and social media projects.  I’m honing my skills in areas I haven’t yet had a chance to work – disciplines such as pay-per-click management and list building, to name a couple.

When I’m done nursing my Internet marketing addiction, I feed my social media addiction.  And when I’m done that, I stay busy reading, exercising, attempting ambitious art projects, and drinking more tea than is reasonable or necessary.

The CrossFit Games are the ultimate test of fitness. It’s a grueling two-day competition in which the world’s fittest athletes compete in a variety of workouts. What are the workouts? Each year they change, and the details of them are not announced until a couple days before the event. This means that all year long, the athletes are training for a competition whose format is almost completely a mystery.

I’m fortunate to be able to say that despite the economic downtown my business grew in 2009 as more and more people took to the web in a serious way.  Even in ancient industries like financial services and construction companies can no longer ignore the power of the web as a sales and marketing tool. It’s just too important.

Here’s what I’m up to today…

This morning I completed a list of goals for 2010. This is something I do every year, the last week of the year: I sit down and review last years goals and how I did and then I write up a new list for the coming year. I focus on coming up with goals in each of the important areas of my life such as: health, relationships, finances, career, education and so on. I put dates on each of the goals, write them in the first person and then workout a plan for the major goals and then add dates to my calendar. Dream it up, plan it, schedule it and then get it done.

The second thing I’m working on right now is a newsletter for clients, prospects and partners (and perhaps a few close friends) that I plan to send out by good old fashion mail in January. I’m taking a look back at 2009 and a look forward into 2010 to highlight some of the things that I feel are important for people to grasp and keep in mind in the coming year. It will of course be focused on Internet marketing and online sales, the things I work on every day with my clients.

So why a paper newsletter?

In 2009 one of the things I began doing was buying up old school direct marketing books like they were going out of style. I think I bought 10+ books in the past 2-3 months and I’ve been reading them almost non-stop. The idea that the web is a direct marketing medium was something I learned by paying attention to Internet marketing legend Ken McCarthy and since the light bulb went off, I’ve been studying away.

One of the things Ken believes in is communicating early and often with your customers and prospects, (something believe in but admittedly I lost site of in 2009 as I got caught up in client work and new projects). He also believes in communicating in as man mediums as possible and good ol’fashioned mail is still something pay attention to so I thought I’d give it a shot.

Another reason I want to send this out by mail is I think it creates a perception that’s different than a blog post or an email and I hope this will be something people will actually open and take some time to read. I think having something in your hand feels more valuable: it’s tangible and real as opposed to just staring at a computer screen like we’ve all been doing for so long.

That wasn’t the only “aha” that was triggered for me in the past few months. Right now I think my head is bursting with knowledge and ideas – there has been soo much innovation and change in the past 3-4 months its mind boggling and find myself needing to write about.

I’m leaving the laptop at home for this one and am only taking a carry on bag, sandals, 2 t-shirts, 2 pairs of shorts and a few miscellaneous including a book on copy writing and the latest copy of INC magazine.

I’ll be checking in after I get settled but may have spotty Internet access until I return on December 3rd.

Since the service launched “more than 3,000 venues and 1,500 users” have been added in Vancouver.

Yesterday I was interviewed by Gillian Shaw of the Vancouver Sun and was quoted in an article about Foursquare that was published today.

Here’s the quote:

Vancouver Web marketing consultant Adam Killam doesn’t mind sharing his whereabouts with friends on his social network. When he tweeted his intention to meet a friend at Earl’s in Yaletown and checked in with Foursquare when he got there, the manager sent free beer to their table.

“Especially being in the technology community, we all hang out in the same places and we want to meet. If you have a secret meeting in a shady part of town you may not want to share it,” he said, laughing.
